RedHat Linux 8.0 on the Sony Vaio C1XD Picturebook

Using the camera

When I upgraded (via Redhat network) to the 2.4.19.8.0 I finally decided to get the camera working again. NOTE: This has ben reported not to work with a recompiled 2.4.20 kernel. Make sure that all modules are made - sonypi.o, videodev.o and meye.o. Make sure that the coresponding /dev/ files exist and have the correct permissions.

I modified my /etc/module.conf file by adding the folowing lines:

alias char-major-10-250 sonypi
options sonypi minor=250 camera=1 fnkeyinit=1
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 meye
options meye gbuffers=32

Make sure you have /dev/sonypi and /dev/video0

Make sure they are chmod 666!!! Very important otherwise only root will be able to read from or write to them.

Reboot and try running

xawtv -noxv -c /dev/video0 -geometry 320x240

Yes the middle aged Linux hacker is out of the closet! Snow is not far off as you can tell by the bright window behind.

Window decoration is an Aqua clone. The background was copied from my Mac G3.
